After talking to Darren about how awesome it is to be in “The Missus” I really wanted to point out the person who really got this thing going. Im now officially prepping for the warm-fuzzy….
The Story
Philip Durrett, Missus Bassist, talked to me one day about a band that he and his friend (Darren White, Missus Vocal/Guitarist) were putting together and being a Bassist myself and excited about the idea my first question of course was “Need a Bassist?”. To my disappointment that position has already been taken, by Philip himself. My dreams of being in a band again since the days of Starlet were broken. However he followed his answer with another, “We need a drummer. Interested?”. I’ve played drums a total of 8 hours in my life…how could I handle such a task. This might just be my last chance to get back into the music scene with a group. So I embraced drumming and man, I liked it.
The Missus (The Missionaries during that time) had their first practice at Darren’s apartment, where I met Darren for the first time. Sometimes people just don’t get each other and never click – This wasnt one of those times. Almost upon entering the room we all hit it off immediately and 10 minutes later we found out that we would do the same musically (Listen to “I Feel Fine” at our first practice). To the three of us, The Missionaries was an instant “Yes!”. We continued to practice for a few months, Darren becoming a little more confident in his vocals, Philip getting better and better at his craft, and I was starting to get a little tighter and better with the drums.
One day Darren invited a friend he knew to join us as a group for practice (Ryan Peterson, Missus Keyboardist). His specialty was in keyboards and the Moog (which is what initially got me interested). It was definately cool to hear his crazy Moog noises, but what I think enticed me the most was hearing him play the keyboards with our music…To me, it worked VERY well. Immediately I was talking to Darren and Philip about snatching him up and making Ryan an Official member. He had all the requirements needed, loved the music, could play well, and most importantly carried a great attitude. Instant Missus in my book.
The Conclusion
So here we are, “The Missus”. Proud of our music, happy with each other and playing our first gig on Sept. 5th. All this couldnt of happened for me if it wasn’t for Philip Durrett saying one simple phrase “We need a drummer. Interested?”.
So thanks Philip, thanks for hooking me up with the best thing that has happened to me musically. You the best!
